How does the bespoke stonework process work?

The process typically begins with a consultation between the client, designer and ourselves, to discuss the client’s vision, suitable requirements, and preferences. From there, the designer creates detailed plans or sketches, which are then refined in collaboration with the client.

Once the design is finalised, we will start the process of selecting the materials and once selected begin the fabrication process, which will involve cutting, shaping, carving, and finishing the stone. Finally, the bespoke stonework is installed at the designated location.

What checks are made prior to install?

A few simple checks can prevent many problems on installation. Access is very important, as some of the bespoke fire surrounds can be very tricky to get into properties. Additionally, we need to check the substrate is solid and can take the weight and third, ensure that if gas is required, it is all correct. It can prove very costly to change once installed.

How do I maintain and clean a limestone or marble fireplace surround?

Daily maintenance requires only a dust or a wipe down with a soft microfibre cloth and a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Never use acidic everyday household cleaners or limescale removers on marble or limestone, as acid chemically etches and dulls the stone’s surface.

Can natural stone fireplaces withstand high heat from log burners?

Yes. Natural stone is highly fire-resistant and acts as an excellent thermal mass, absorbing heat from your fire and gently radiating it back into the room. However, certain stones like marble or limestone require professional installation to ensure correct expansion joints are left near high-heat wood-burning stoves.

What is the difference between a slab fireplace and a solid block fireplace?

Slab fireplaces use precision-cut, 20mm or 30mm thick stone panels expertly mitred together to give a solid appearance, which is ideal for modern, lightweight, or large-format designs. Solid block fireplaces are hand-carved directly out of a single, heavy block of stone, offering a traditional, deeply textured, and monolithic structure.
