Description

Chambolle Limestone from France is a prestigious sedimentary stone quarried in the heart of the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy. Renowned for its luminous cream-to-beige palette and fine-grained “Oolitic” structure, Chambolle has been the backbone of French chateaus and ecclesiastical architecture for centuries.

Today, it is the premier choice for designers seeking a minimalist Mediterranean aesthetic with the proven durability of European heritage stone.

The “Chambolle” Identity: Terroir & Texture

Extracted near the historic village of Chambolle-Musigny, this limestone is more than a building material—it is a piece of French history.

  • Visual Profile: A sophisticated “Cloudy” beige base with delicate fossilised inclusions.

  • Geological Origin: Middle Jurassic (Bathonian) limestone, known for its high compression strength and low water absorption.

  • Versatility: Unlike softer limestones, Chambolle is dense enough for high-traffic “Gare” (station) grade applications.

Applications

Key Technical Performance

  • Thermal Mass: Excellent heat retention for interior flooring with underfloor heating.

  • Freeze-Thaw Resistance: Highly resilient in northern climates, preventing “spalling” in outdoor paving.

  • Luminous Reflectivity: Its high solar reflectance index (SRI) helps keep urban facades and patios cool.

  • Sustainability: 100% natural, low-VOC, and fully recyclable.

When specifying Chambolle Limestone for your project, selecting the correct surface treatment is essential for both safety and aesthetic harmony. Below is a guide to the most popular finishes and their architectural applications.

Use honed or brushed for interior flooring. It provide a silky matte finish, while emphasising the delicate fossil patterns unique to Burgundy stone.

Use sandblasted for flooring and facades. This finish enhances teh mechanical grip and provides a uniform non-reflective matte look across teh surface.

Sealing

Sealing: When the finished surface is completely dry, the areas can be protected with a suitable sealer. Stain Proof Impregnating Sealer will give an invisible, breathable, long term protection from water and oil based stains.

Maintenance

Cleaning: Use only pH-neutral stone cleaners. Avoid acidic substances (like vinegar or lemon) which can etch the surface. For flooring it is advisable to use a dry micro fiber mop where possible, this will reduce the risk of scratching. Regular professional cleaning is advised. When wet washing always use an acid-free product! Allow the floor to dry thoroughly during the first 3 to 6 months. During this period it is important to use only a small amount of water to mop the floor and allow the surplus moisture to evaporate from the tiles; also use a product that does not seal the pores of the stone (e.g. Lithofin MN Easy Care Cleaner). This product is always added to the wash water and can be used for future regular cleaning. Worktops should be cleaned with a neutral PH cleaner, and dried with a soft cotton cloth.
